AOA COACHES CONFERENCE WELL ATTENDED, INFORMATIVE
On behalf of Alpine Ontario and our member clubs I would like to thank Heather Metzger for a job well done this past weekend in organizing and implementing the 2010 AOA Coaches Conference. Heather is the Athletic Development Director at Alpine Ontario.
The conference was made possible with support from the World Cup Club, Quest for Gold program and the Georgian Peaks Ski Club. Thank you to all three organizations for supporting coach education and athlete development in Ontario ski racing.
Over 110 coaches from across the province participated in the conference and from what I have heard in the days since it was an incredibly well run, informative and most importantly, a relevant conference.
Our new Ontario Ski Team Men’s head coach Thomas Erhard had only positive things to say. Erhard estimates that he has attended more than 15 conferences during his career and in many instances was in Heather’s shoes organizing the entire event. He has worked on conferences for USSA, the Vermont Racing Association and the NY Ski Racing Association – this was his first Canadian coaches conference.
Erhard comments. “This conference was so well put together regarding the content. It addressed what coaches need to think about and work on this coming season. The first day both Cam (Twible) and I made presentations on the Ontario Ski Team athletes showing specific video and commentary on the 22 athletes selected to our team. After we finished many coaches came up to both of us to say how good it was to actually watch the athletes and hear what technique we are working on. It did make us feel like we were all on the same page in terms of athlete development.
Erhard continues, “The second day of the conference was perfect in that it was focused on sport science and reassured all of us that we are on the right track with the Ontario Ski Team and aligned with leading experts as they alpine skiing from a scientific perspective. It is easy to think you are doing the right thing but certainly good to hear from sport experts that we are on the right track.”
We hope to build on the momentum of this conference with a great start to the season – the Ontario Ski Team is on snow this week in their second training camp in Austria and many club programs are ramping up both dryland programs and planning their fall trips to the snow in the West.
Work hard on the slopes or trails.
